Long before the era of all-organic everything came into play (which we very much embrace at VIDA), microneedling was readily available and well ahead of its time. It has been one of the most-requested treatments at VIDA since the beginning, both as a singular treatment and as a complement to virtually every other procedure and treatment. Microneedling is minimally invasive, requiring no incisions or recovery period. It is also completely natural while foregoing the need to inject or place any product into or onto the skin.

How exactly does microneedling work if it doesn’t add anything to our regimen? Microneedling encourages the body to create an influx of collagen and elastin directly at the target site. Collagen and elastin are the body’s natural “fountains of youth” and are responsible for helping skin maintain an appropriate level of laxity. However, everyone creates less of these proteins as we age. Some people are also genetically predisposed to produce more than others. We can manipulate our body into creating more of these proteins where we want them with microneedling.

How Microneedling Works

When the body experiences trauma, it responds by sending blood to the area and creating collagen at the site. This is true regardless of the severity of the trauma or whether it’s controlled or not. Microneedling uses a medical-grade handle full of tiny needles to create precise micro-injuries in the skin. These needles are specially made for professionals and are only available on medical-grade microneedling devices.

Professionals can also control the exact width and depth of the needles to achieve optimal results. Being aware that various types of needles exist for this procedure is a reminder of just how important it is to only trust a professional with microneedling. If you see a device available for sale to the public, be wary. These devices either aren’t medical-grade and won’t deliver the best results, or they are being illegally sold and could be dangerous to use if you’re not a pro. Proper microneedling does not cause real injuries and poses no risk of scarring or infection—the same may not be true of DIY devices.

The results of microneedling won’t be seen right away. The body requires a little time to produce collagen. Microneedling works best as a routine treatment and you’ll enjoy seeing the results reveal themselves in the weeks after treatment.
