Intended Pulsed Light (IPL) and Broadband Light (BBL)

Intense pulsed light (IPL) and broadband light (BBL) are two of our oldest and most effective modalities available to treat pigmented skin. They work by delivering intense pulses of light to the skin, reducing brown spots caused by sun damage as well as facial redness/veins. The Forever Young BBL treatment is a maintenance treatment that helps maximize and sustain the results of your initial BBL treatments.

IPL, BBL, and Forever Young BBL

Just like any procedure or treatment, choosing the right providers who are experienced and well-trained is important. The expert providers at VIDA Aesthetic Medicine have performed countless BBL, Forever Young BBL, and IPL treatments with excellent results. We believe there is a difference between these devices and treatments. All of these treatments work by directing heat into the skin which then targets the discoloration and destroys the cells. The body naturally begins the healing process, which produces healthy collagen and elastin and makes our skin look beautiful.

With every BBL, IPL, and Forever Young BBL treatment, collagen is stimulated and can erase years of sun damage and signs of aging. The process helps to restore your own natural beauty, resulting in brighter, younger-looking, more evenly toned skin. These treatments aren’t just for the face. Our non-invasive BBL and IPL treatments are the best way to eliminate pigmented spots on the arms, too. Pulses of light remove unwanted brown or red pigment so you can enjoy smooth, evenly toned skin.

Our state-of-the-art Sciton system is highly effective at improving skin tone while stimulating collagen production. Our providers don’t follow a one-size-fits-all approach for every client. Instead, they carefully assess your skin, tailoring the settings of the treatment to your specific skin type and needs to ensure the desired results. This means that you receive the most effective and safest treatment possible. Every procedure at VIDA is reviewed by our medical director.

How BBL Works

Forever Young BBL treatments remove signs of aging and sun damage by reducing the appearance of brown and red pigmentation (dyschromia) while simultaneously encouraging collagen production. It uses near-infrared energy along with optical light to tighten and rejuvenate the skin. Studies and research by Dr. Patrick Bitter, including at Stanford University, have shown that Forever Young BBL treatments may actually change gene expression to encourage aged cells to behave like younger cells, increasing collagen production and improving skin elasticity. With routine Forever Young BBL treatments, your skin will continue to look younger over time. At VIDA, after your initial treatment series of treatments, we recommend maintenance treatments a few times per year, depending on your goals and levels of skin damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will I see results from BBL?2020-02-08T15:15:01-08:00

Immediately after your treatment, you’ll notice that the brown spots look darker. They will continue to darken over the next few days and might look similar to coffee grounds. However, in the weeks following your treatment, these spots flake away. You might see some increased redness and temporary swelling if you’re addressing red pigmentation, but it too will go away in following your treatment. Keep in mind that the skin may look worse before it gets better, but this is all part of the process.

Is there any downtime associated with BBL?2020-02-08T15:15:35-08:00

There is no downtime after BBL, and clients often immediately return to their daily activities after their treatment. However, you may notice brown spots darken and may experience mildly increased redness and swelling after your treatment.

How many BBL treatments will I need?2020-02-08T15:13:43-08:00

The number of treatments depends on the amount and type of pigment to be targeted. For brown pigment caused by sun damage, VIDA recommends 3-5 treatments spaced four weeks apart. To minimize facial redness, we recommend a package of five treatments. Since your body will continue to create blood vessels and show signs of sun damage, we recommend maintenance treatments every few months or at least twice per year.

How long does the BBL procedure take?2020-02-08T15:14:12-08:00

Procedure length depends on the area being treated, but you can plan on spending 30–60 minutes in the office in most cases.

Treatments that Complement IPL, BBL, and Forever Young BBL

VIDA offers an array of treatments that complement BBL and Forever Young BBL so you can enjoy even more incredible and lasting results. A superficial chemical peel removes the very top layer of dead skin, revealing brighter, smoother skin below the surface. Like light therapy, a chemical peel reduces sun damage and signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and skin laxity. Combining a chemical peel with light therapy can maximize results, and the addition of routine skincare takes that one step further.

Microdermabrasion helps with maintaining the benefits of BBL treatments. In-office microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that renews skin texture and tone by exfoliating the outermost layer of skin.

Dermaplaning, when performed expertly and completely, will temporarily remove the “peach fuzz” on the face, which can’t be addressed with laser hair reduction. Peach fuzz can trap debris, make-up, and environmental pollutants that can exacerbate breakouts. Removing these fine, unwanted hairs allows for a smoother appearance and helps topical treatments penetrate the skin’s surface. Dermaplaning exfoliates the outermost layer of skin, leaving your skin silky and smooth.

Microneedling is a fantastic complement to BBL because it boosts collagen production. It works by creating tiny micro-injuries in the top level of the skin. Your body responds to this by directing more blood flow to the area while stimulating collagen production to “heal” the area. Many clients like to schedule regular microneedling treatments every few months for maximum, sustained benefits.

What to Expect with BBL and Other Light Therapies

During your appointment, your skin is cleansed, and a gel is applied. You’ll wear protective goggles but will see flashes of light during the treatment. Many clients describe the feeling as being like a hot snap against the skin. Light therapy can treat the face, neck, cheeks, chest, arms, and hands.

After your BBL treatment, it may feel like you have a mild sunburn for about 24 hours. Some swelling may occur. Brown spots will darken, and redness may increase. However, this is temporary, and you’ll start to see improvements within 2–3 weeks after your treatment.
