Plenty of people opt out of shaving during the winter months, but if your summer plans include tropical getaways or days at the pool or beach, it’s time to start thinking about body hair removal. Men and women alike spend an average of over one entire month (24/7 around the clock) on body hair removal. Whether it’s shaving, waxing, sugaring or tweezing, this kind of hair removal maintenance is costly in many ways—it wastes your time and these tools and treatments are quite costly in the long run. Laser hair reduction can quickly, efficiently, and drastically reduce unwanted hair. At VIDA, we only offer the best technologies for all of your skin care needs, which is why we exclusively provide MedLite C6 laser treatment to remove unwanted hair.

Laser hair reduction is just what it sounds like—it’s a large reduction, not a total removal, of unwanted hair. The only way to permanently remove all unwanted hair is via electrolysis, a painful, expensive, and very time-consuming procedure. Since electrolysis destroys (via electric shock) individual hairs in each follicle, it can take many years of dedicated appointments to achieve this. Laser hair reduction, on the other hand, is typically achieved in just a few 30-minute sessions.

How Laser Hair Reduction Works

Similar to electrolysis, laser hair reduction also destroys hair follicles but it is much more comfortable and does not call for follicle-by-follicle treatment. Instead, the technology can span the treatment area quickly, zapping unwanted hairs with the Q-switched Nd-YAG laser. It uses acoustic energy that destroys unwanted pigmentation (like hair follicles) into tiny pieces that are then absorbed and expelled by the body. The MedLite C6 works best when treating darker hairs, just like any laser hair reduction technology.

Most clients require 4 – 6 treatments spaced about one month apart for the best results. However, you will see initial results just a few days after your first treatment. Since hair grows in cycles, you of course cannot treat (destroy) hairs that are not currently there. This is why both laser hair reduction and its painful counterpart, electrolysis, simply cannot get rid of all hairs even in a tiny area during one treatment. We must follow the hair’s own cycle. However, if you start laser hair reduction now, you will see great results before the end of summer.

Why Laser Hair Reduction?

One of the most common reasons men and women choose laser hair reduction is because they’re fed up with shaving, waxing, or other forms of hair removal. It takes time, daily, to keep up with unwanted hair. It can be painful, whether from razor nicks or waxing in sensitive areas. Plus, hairs often grow back quickly, especially if you are used to shaving. It is not uncommon to require daily shaving in the summer months to keep skin as smooth as possible.

The increasing costs of razor blades and temporary treatments, like sugaring, have also led people to discover laser hair reduction. There’s no other way to put it: traditional hair removal is simply too much. Laser hair reduction offers an affordable alternative with dramatic results that last. Although laser hair reduction is a reduction in hair, not a total removal, for many clients the results are great enough that they ditch shaving or waxing entirely.

What to Expect with Laser Hair Reduction

Most appointments are around 30 minutes, but may be longer if you are treating multiple sites. The majority of clients compare the sensation to a light sting or a rubber band snapping against the skin, and they do not require a numbing topical. However, for those with sensitive skin or when treating sensitive areas, a numbing agent may be used. There is no downtime for laser hair reduction, although the treatment site may look red and be sensitive for a day or two post-treatment. If you are getting treatment in an area that is clearly seen, such as the face, schedule your appointment for a couple of days prior to any big events or vacations.
