Why Are There So Many Dermal Fillers?

The majority of dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA) and most also include lidocaine or a similar numbing agent for optimal comfort. HA is already found in the body, so this drastically reduces any small risk of the body “rejecting” this product or labeling it as a foreign object. We produce less HA as we age, and we have no control over where exactly that HA is synthesized—unless you opt for dermal fillers. HA-based dermal fillers offer immediate results, though some slight swelling and redness can be expected right after the treatment. If you’re thinking about dermal fillers for a special occasion, it’s a good idea to book your filler appointment about one week in advance.

Other dermal fillers can offer subtler and often longer-lasting results. For example, Sculptra encourages the body to produce collagen at the treatment site. You may notice some very slight improvement shortly after the injections, but the creation of collagen takes time. Some clients prefer these dermal fillers because they like the idea of their own body producing results and of course a boost of collagen production is a great way to turn back the clock. Plus, Sculptra lasts longer than most HA fillers at about two years on average.

The Difference in HA Dermal Fillers in Salem

If most dermal fillers are made with HA, why are there so many of them? Even within certain “families” of fillers, such as Juvederm, there are a number of options. Each is designed to treat different areas of the face, and some can even be injected into the tops of the hands. The hands tend to give away age just as quickly as the face and can be an overlooked and neglected area. If you want whole rejuvenation and a little time reversal, dermal fillers in the tops of the hands make an excellent complement to facial fillers.

There are slight modifications and differences in every HA filler that allow them to achieve optimal results in targeted areas. For instance, some HA fillers might be designed to “spread” and cover a larger area while others are very viscous and “stick” in place better. As you can imagine, a different HA composition should (and is) necessary to treat the jawline compared to the lips. This intricate level of detail and technology means that dermal fillers can provide dramatic results while still looking natural.

What About Kybella?

Kybella isn’t a dermal filler, but it’s a very common treatment used to improve the contours of the face—and results are permanent. Kybella dissolves the fat that accumulates under the chin (submental fat), otherwise known as a double chin. A series of injections are necessary because it is essential to avoid dissolving too much fat. The fat cells are absorbed and expelled by the body in the days and weeks following the treatment sessions. Most people need 3 – 6 sessions spaced one month apart. Once fat cells are dissolved, they are gone for good, but keep in mind that Kybella is not an alternative to a healthy diet and exercise.
