Even if you’ve never had microneedling before, you’ve probably heard about it. It’s a classic treatment here at VIDA and has been a popular method for improving overall skin quality since the 1990s (though it was an established method for many years before that). Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, was originally invented (or, better yet, discovered) in 1905. There are no products, serums, or chemicals used in microneedling. It’s simply your body’s natural healing powers activated and maximized.

Technically, microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment, though it feels like a non-invasive treatment. It works by creating miniscule “injuries” in the skin via special needles of various widths and depths. When the body undergoes a “trauma,” collagen is kickstarted at the affected site. This is part of the body’s natural way of healing itself. However, collagen is also the key to looking youthful and radiant. We produce less collagen as we age, but microneedling can take our skin back to its youth by encouraging collagen production.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

This is one of the first questions microneedling newcomers ask, and the answer is not at all. The so-called injuries created by microneedling are so shallow and tiny that you can’t see them with the naked eye. Most people compare the feeling of microneedling to that of a light exfoliation. However, “microneedling” can be dangerous and painful if you try a DIY home approach.

If you’ve seen microneedling devices for sale in the store or online, beware. Only professionals can legally purchase medical-grade microneedling devices. What you see in stores is usually a much milder version of microneedling that will either do nothing at best or damage your skin at worst. You only want to trust an expert with microneedling because only they have the tools and techniques to achieve safe, beautiful results.

However, also keep in mind that microneedling results aren’t immediate. It takes the body some time to produce that collagen. You’ll start to see clearer skin with less imperfections, dullness, and wrinkles a few weeks after your treatment. Most clients consider microneedling a routine pampering treatment scheduled every few months. To learn more about microneedling or schedule a complimentary consultation, call VIDA at (503) 399-0021.
