A couple of decades ago, lip augmentation was the stuff of comedy (think The First Wives Club). There is always the risk of a botched lip job when you go to an inexperienced injector, but lip fillers, in general, have gone from a niche trend to a staple treatment for men and women alike. Lip fillers are one of the most popular treatments at VIDA, a medical day spa where injectors include Medical Director Dr. Glen Jarosz, Dr. Thompson, Kseniya Trofimchik, RN, and Ashley Stinger, RN. We are proud to be one of the few MediSpas where doctors and other highly trained injectors perform lip augmentation so you can get the perfect pout.

We are much more than a medspa because we are led by MDs who are board-certified and personally train the entire staff. Home to your favorite lip fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, and more, whether you’re thinking about your first lip filler or you simply want to find the best lip injections in Salem, you deserve to get results you’ll love every time.

Lip Filler History

Decades ago, lip augmentation was somewhat risky and only the most elite could afford them because it was strictly a surgical treatment. Today, lip fillers offer a minimally invasive and non-surgical solution that is accessible, affordable and requires virtually no downtime. Every year, the demand for lip fillers grows and now lip augmentation is just as common as Botox.

Although it may seem that the demand for fuller lips happened suddenly (some crediting certain reality stars), in reality, the desire for more volume in the lips can be traced to the nineteenth century—somewhat. Initially, lip fillers were made from fat and meant strictly for facial reconstruction, such as patients who suffered from tuberculosis. The roots of lip fillers can sound a little ghastly, but it didn’t take long for physicians in the early 1900s to offer lip augmentation as a cosmetic treatment. It was experimental at the time and the technology wasn’t where it needed to be, but clearly, people already wanted to plump and shape their lips well over 100 years ago.

Why We Love Lip Fillers

There is a long history of what exactly has been injected into the lips, with liquid paraffin following fat injections. That, unsurprisingly, did not work. By the 1960s silicone was the go-to ingredient, which resulted in early trout pout or duck lips. Not only were the results undesirable, they were also dangerous. There was a brief period in the 1970s that used cow collagen, but that was also a failure.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that lip augmentation made big strides. Human collagen was used during this period, but of course today we have much safer and effective options like hyaluronic acid (HA). This substance is naturally synthesized by the body, and you might spot it in a variety of skin care products. However, 2015 was definitely a turning point for lip fillers when Kylie Jenner finally confessed her new lips were thanks to fillers. Just 24 hours later, there was a 70 percent increase in requests for lip fillers at medical spas around the country. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that 27,000 people in the U.S. opted for lip fillers in 2015—which equates to one treatment every 15 minutes.

Loving Your New Lips

The media certainly plays a role in beauty trends, but the media can also help drive down prices while increasing demand. Today, lip fillers are so affordable that anyone who wants them can get them. There’s also fierce competition amongst lip filler makers, so you can get fully customized results and choose from a variety of filler options for just the right look that lasts your preferred timeframe. Plus, you don’t have to stop at lip fillers. There are dermal fillers for every part of the face, and some fillers are even suitable for the tops of the hands.

Keep in mind that the skill of the injector is equally as important as the type of lip filler chosen. Lip injections require experience, training, and an artful eye. Working with doctors and nurses who specialize in lip injections is the best way to achieve the results you want.
