WHAT IS ROSACEA?
Rosacea is a common, chronic, treatable skin condition that affects an estimated 16 million people in the United States alone and approximately 45 million people worldwide. Nearly 70% of Rosacea patients said this condition has lowered their self-confidence, and 41% reported it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements.
Although Rosacea may develop at any age, it typically begins after age 30 as a flushing or recurring redness on the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear. If left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases – particularly in men – the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue.
Rosacea often flares when certain triggers cause the blood vessels in the face to expand, resulting in redness. Common triggers are: exercise, sun, wind, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and hot baths. Swings in temperature from hot to cold or cold to hot can also cause Rosacea to flare-up.
Symptoms of Rosacea may include:
- Persistent facial redness, the most common symptom
- A flushed face and pimples or bumps around the cheeks, nose, mouth, and forehead
- Tiny red veins on the face that look like spiderwebs
- Burning or stinging facial skin, especially when lotions or medicines are applied
- Increasingly dry, sensitive, or sunburned looking skin
- Dry, red, irritated eyes. Eyelids may look red and swollen, and vision may be blurry
HOW IS ROSACEA TREATED?
There are many treatment choices for Rosacea, depending on the severity and extent of symptoms. Antibiotics, various oral and topical medications, intense pulsed light (IPL) or broad band light (BBL) may be appropriate.
At VIDA we offer several treatments that include topical creams (non-prescription and prescription) as well as the Forever Young BBL which targets red vessels to achieve even, toned skin.
